Iris DeMent at the Belly Up June 23
Last year she released her first album of original songs in 16 years, but it was worth the wait. Iris DeMent is a voice that I know that you have heard before. I first heard her with John Prine on the magnificent album, In Spite of Ourselves, which, if you do not own, march right down to the local record store and demand it. On it Iris provides beautiful and playful back-up vocals that take each song to a new level. From this album I began to explore Ms. DeMent’s music. She is a great songwriter in her own right, her first album appeared when she was 25 years old in 1992 and met to critical acclaim for its’ stripped down honest songwriting and beautiful singing. The song, Let the Mystery Be, was covered by 10,000 Maniacs and showcases her talent well. She has sung duets with Emmylou Harris and Steve Earle also. She has been called an American Treasure and once you here her voice it will lure you heart first into a soft smiling reverie. If you enjoy the likes of Emmylou Harris or Gillian Welsh then head out and check out Iris DeMent when she rolls through San Diego.
